MTH 2R SOU SD45

I reviewed this diesel in a decently full extent in issue 59 of OST (this is a great magazine to subscribe to if you're interested in detailing and building your own stuff).

Here are some more photos that never made it into the magazine.  This is NOT a stock model.  There were a lot of super-detailing additions done to it.  The magazine review details those.

I do not know how I'm going to DCC this engine.  I'm currently waiting to hear how easy it will be to upgrade to PS3 and if it adds DCC, since its already a 2R engine.  Enjoy.

  1. Only errors that jump out are the FRA coupler cut levers with footboards and the yellow handrails.

The ATC shoe installation limits you to the early years for these units. Handrails were not yellow during that time.

On the plus side, your weathering is simply excellent. You capture the look of these as I remember them. Now, do five more and a "cracker box" RC receiver car. Assemble 300 cars, put three about 150 cars back and you will have 1960's Southern Railway...

    1. Anonymous…would be nice to find out more about the first error you mention as I'm not exactly sure what the issue is for the cut levers…

I am only modeling up until 1971 and not sure when the ATC shoes were taken off, so I think I am safe, since these were built in 1967. My weathering kind of pushes this model to 1969…per a Warren Calloway photo I used. The roof was even roughly this lightened, maybe not this light, but the Southern Sun does beat down kind of hard.

Would be nice to have an O scale pike that could manage 300-car trains, but we'll see if that ever happens.

    2. David,

He's saying that if the coupler cut levers are modeled with the "loop" at the top, the footboards in front shouldn't be there.

The FRA mandated that all pilot footboards had to be removed (safety issue) which, in turn, necessitated that each railroad's shops also had to modify the cut levers with some sort of arrangement (usually the "loop" shape, as you've modeled) which allowed for operation from the steps behind.

  2. Do you do custom work? I'm in the market for an O scale D&H SD45.~ Michael

  3. Michael,

I take that as a compliment, but I'm afraid I just don't have the time anymore to work on anyone else's equipment but my own, and even then, my workbench would show you that I don't even have enough time to finish my own projects.

Best of luck. The D&H looks nice; I'm assuming EL owned them at some point as the scheme looks really similar. Best bet may be waiting for MTH to release this paint scheme.
